As we continue to walk in greater understanding of God’s grace it is beneficial for us to look at Biblical examples that demonstrate God’s unfailing grace. It brings encouragement to our hearts
because God is no respecter of persons. We look at Jonathan’s son Mephibosheth. David as King, wanted to search out and see if there was anyone left from Jonathan’s line that he could bless. (2 Samuel 9:1) “Now David said, “Is there anyone who is left of the house of Saul that I may show him kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” God our Father is doing this continually as well. He is looking for those that will allow Him to extend grace into their lives and be in a loving relationship with them.
Psalms demonstrates this. (Psalm 84:11) “For the Lord is a sun and a shield; The Lord will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man who trusts you.” Mephibosheth had done nothing to deserve David’s grace and favor. David removed Mephibosheth from the barren place called Lo-debar. Lo-debar was a wasteland of brokenness, desolation and depravity. As you recall what Jesus has done in your life you know that He alone has rescued you from the kingdom of desolation, brokenness, barrenness and depravity. “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love.” (Colossians 1:13)
Thankfully, my imperfections and natural inclinations to sin are just like the crippling factors in the body of Mephibosheth. They continually indicate and display my need for our Lord’s grace. As we rely more and more upon the grace of God we begin to see the operation of Romans 12:9-17 at work in our lives.
“Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live in peace.”
Father how very grateful I am for Your grace working in my life. As I look over my life it becomes clear that when I’ve relied on You and Your grace in my life, my response to difficult circumstances has been more like Christ. By faith in You I ask for a greater revelation of Your grace in my life. That my life will be without hypocrisy and that I will abhor that which is evil. Strengthen me so that I respond in brotherly love toward others. May I serve You with a fervent spirit and remain steadfast in prayer. May I always bless and not curse. Show me how to rejoice with those that rejoice and weep with those that weep. Guide me as I think so that my heart will always be humble and may I never repay evil for evil. It is only by Your grace that I can be this person. So I ask for this to manifest in my life in Jesus name I pray. Amen.
