“The Lord is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.” – Habakkuk 2:20
“…when you are on your beds, search your hearts and be silent. Selah.” – Psalm 4:4
Worship is huge.
It’s so much bigger than singing songs, raising our hands, dancing, etc (although I love those things). Worship happens when we consecrate our hearts and fully devote ourselves to Him and His purposes. When my heart is not consecrated to Him, that’s when I’ve stopped worshiping. I can dance, sing, and shout all I want, but it’s just religious action if my heart is not fully His.
Tying my shoe can be an act of worship. Mowing the lawn can be worship. Anything can be worship if our hearts are consecrated to Him. There is another form of worship that doesn’t get the spotlight too much that I want to write about and that is silence.
Before you continue reading, take a few minutes and check out this song called, “In The Silence” by Jason Upton.
I absolutely love the words in this song that state, “In the silence You are speaking”. To me that is so powerful and yet so simple! God is certainly a gentleman and gentleman don’t speak over others. If we’re always the ones speaking it’s going to be very difficult for us to hear His voice – mainly because He’s probably waiting for us to stop talking! There’s always a time to sing and speak to Him, but are we leaving Him the time to sing and speak to us? (Check out Zephaniah 3:17 if you’re unsure if He sings to us. He loves to.)
To me, I’d rather hear just one word from Him than speak a thousand words to Him – even if my words were heartfelt. There is time and necessity for both, but I’m just saying if I had to only pick one of those then it would be His voice I’d like to hear rather than mine. The Bible says His voice is over the waters. His voice is powerful and majestic. His voice breaks cedar trees into pieces and strips oaks and forests bare. His voice strikes with flashes of lightning. His voice shakes the desert. (Psalm 29)
I’m sorry but my voice just doesn’t do that. His voice is awesome and brings pleasure coupled with heart wrenching power. That’s why I want to hear His voice more than mine!
Furthermore, I’ve heard it said that sometimes even praise can be a manifestation of our doubt. This is probably not the case most of the time, but I know it’s happened at times in my life. Sometimes, we absolutely need to praise Him through the storm. But I also think there are other times when we need to just simply listen to the Holy Spirit. It was indeed the voice of Jesus that calmed the wind and waves of the storm. (Mark 4:35)
The weather obeys His voice (Jesus calms the storm). Creation obeys His voice (The story of Noah). The universe obeys His voice (In the beginning). Demons and even the devil obey His voice (Read about anytime a demon faced Jesus). However, in His glorious wisdom He gives mankind the choice in their time on earth (The rich young ruler in Mark 10:17-22 is one example that comes to mind).
What will our choice be today? Let’s consecrate ourselves to His heart and get into the secret place with Him, leaving Him the time to speak to us.
Love you fam!
